Government recordkeeping - overview

The Archives Office (through the statutory position of State Archivist) regulates the preservation and eventual destruction or retention of State and local government records in Tasmania, in accordance with the provisions of the Archives Act 1983, to ensure that records of continuing value to the public and the government are accessible for appropriate lengths of time. The Office also provides a number of services to government organisations, both directly and to assist them in complying with their responsibilities and obligations under this Act.

These services include

  • An on-going program of issuing State records guidelines and advices provides a framework of policies, standards, and procedures for government recordkeeping on a range of records and archives related topics.
  • A records retrieval service for short term use of records in agencies, to enable the retrieval of records from the Archives Office which the Agency has transferred. Limited research may be able to be undertaken on archival material by Archives Office staff for agency purposes.
  • The provision of certified copies under seal for use in courts and for other legal or formal purposes.
