The following agencies had responsibility for Immigration

  • Immigration Agents Department 1841 – 1855
  • Immigration Board 1855 – 1885
  • Chief Secretary’s Department - Immigration Committee 1886 - 1910
  • Immigration Bureaux, which in 1908 were established in Hobart and Launceston took over work from the Immigration Committees and operated in conjunction with the Tourist Associations in each city.
  • Immigration Branch, Agricultural Department 1911 – 24
  • Industrial Department 1924 – 1930
  • Charitable Grants /Social Services – 1930 - 1946
  • State Immigration Office 1946 – 1982
