The first three guides each has a detailed introduction outlining the role, functions and administration of the government organisation which created the records covered by the guide and provides detailed descriptions of the arrangement and content of each series of records.

The fourth Guide includes all records relating to immigration regardless of the government agency which created them. As well as descriptions of all the relevant series of records this guide also gives an outline of the various government immigration schemes and an administrative history of the major agencies involved with these schemes.
