Records retention and disposal schedules

Records retention and disposal schedules are the primary formal instruments through which the State Archivist authorises the length of time for which records must be retained.

  • schedules arranged by issue date  - this list of  schedules is in two sections - generic schedules for records created across a number of agencies, and agency functional schedules for some or all, of a single agency's functions. This list is arranged generally by the date that the schedules were issued.
  • schedules arranged by government functions - this list of schedules is arranged by the broad State or local government function which produced the records they cover.

These schedules authorise appropriate disposal action (ie permanent retention or, retention for specified periods of time or specified actions, followed by destruction) for records created and stored by State and local government organisations. These schedules are formally approved by the State Archivist under Section 20 (2) (b) of the Archives Act 1983.
They are issued to State and local government organisations and are published on our website:

  • for the use of these government organisations
  • to enable members of the Tasmanian community to see the retention status of our government's records so far covered by these schedules.

We welcome any comments or feedback from members of the public about the contents of these schedules.
