Department of Education - Archives Office of Tasmania

Copying & reproduction of 'State archives'

If you want to obtain a copy of a record that you are accessing in our search room there are a number of options.

  • If the record is in a microfilm, or a digital format, there are relevant printers available in the search room that can be used to provide a copy.
  • If the record is in a paper format, the Archives Office provides a fee based copying service which can produce, paper, microfilm, photographic negative, or digital copies. The costs and options are listed in our fees and charges schedule.
  • If the record is in an audio/visual format, such as a voice recording or a film or video, copies of these can be provided. The options are listed in our fees and charges schedule.

With some limitations, researchers may also use their own digital or other cameras in the search room to take images of records. This requires permission from Archives Office staff and the completion of a form (AOT61) listing the items copied and acknowledging that they are for private use only.

Copyright, reproduction, and publication

Virtually all material in the Archives Office is subject to Crown, or other, copyright and requests to reproduce or publish material should be made separately to the Archives Office, by email to taho@education.tas.gov.au or by writing to us at 91 Murray St Hobart. This applies to copies whether they are provided by the Archives Office or made by researchers themselves, and whether they are made in the Office or provided remotely by the Office. There are fees for the further  use or publication of copies of records listed in our fees and charges schedule; on application, these may be waived or reduced in cases where the publication or use is of a non-commercial nature.
