Department of Education - Archives Office of Tasmania

General information about reference services

  • All archival records held in the Archives Office are available for public reference unless they are subject to a restriction placed on them by the organisation that created them. All such restrictions will eventually expire and the records become available. More general information about public access to records is provided.
  • Records can be used for reference purposes either by personal visits to the search room at 91 Murray St, Hobart, or by arranging with others to search on your behalf - the Archives Office can provide some research services.
  • A comprehensive range of copying services is available covering most types of records formats. These are listed in detail in the fees and charges schedule.
  • Most records are described in finding aids available in the search room, where there is also a number of indexes to the contents of many records which have been compiled by Archives Office staff. The Tasmanian Archives Online database also contains comprehensive descriptive information about our holdings.
  • The practices used for records arrangement and description are generally the same as those used in all government archival institutions in Australia.
