Research services

For those unable to visit us to undertake their own research or obtain their own copies of records our staff will search indexes we have compiled, and/or provide copies of records where references are quoted from our on-line or other indexes. If sufficient information is supplied we will check other records which appear relevant to the topic.

Payments for any service which incurs charges may be made by credit card (our preferred option, especially from outside Australia), cheque, or money order. Please do not send payments by cheque or money order in advance - we will send an invoice to you when we have undertaken the work for you.

Research requests can be sent to us by post, fax, or email. We will not normally take research requests by phone. As we may need to reply by post, please make sure that you include your postal address with your research request. Personal Information Protection statement.

Please note that it may be 6-8 weeks before your enquiry is completed due to a high demand for our services. Indicate a deadline if appropriate.

Some factors that may restrict, or are Variations to, this service are

The amount of staff time which can be devoted to individual enquiries is limited and lengthy searches of un-indexed records can not usually be undertaken.
Generally the number of record copies which can be provided within one request with quoted references from our online indexes, is limited and usually only four record copies will be provided in one request (for convict records this only applies to records that are not yet available online). These copy requests may take up to 90 days to process
If in the view of the staff further research may be useful or if a search of un-indexed material is required a list of private researchers will be enclosed with the reply.
