Search Room Rules

In order to ensure the proper preservation of archival material for current and future researchers and enable all search room users to undertake research with minimal disturbance below are rules which should be followed in the search room

Users of the search room should sign into the visitors register each day. 

Users of this area should not -

  • bring bags into the search room unless approved by Archives Office staff
  • enter a designated Archives Office staff or storage area without permission
  • write in or on a State archive
  • use anything other than a pencil or computer for note-taking
  • place any thing or object on, or lean upon, a State archive or fold, crease, cut, mark, or otherwise damage or mutilate, a State archive
  • use a State archive which is available on microfilm or in a digital form, in other form without prior approval
  • remove a State archive from the Archives Office without approval from the State Archivist
  • eat, drink, or smoke in the search room or foyer area
  • wilfully disturb or interrupt a person in the use of the Archives Office
  • use a mobile phone, camera, or other equipment in the search room without permission
  • behave in a manner which, in the opinion of the State Archivist, is detrimental to the maintenance and preservation of State archives

A person who does not comply with, or contravenes, these rules may be excluded or removed from the search room by Archives Office staff or be subject to the financial penalties (between $200 and $500) specified in the Archives Regulations 2004.
